The Walter Hochschild Program was inaugurated in 1983 by the AMAX Foundation and the friends and family of Walter Hochschild, to support Studies programs on international economics issues.
Walter Hochschild joined the American Metal Company (Amco) in 1920, and became its president in 1950. In 1957, the company merged with Climax Molybdenum and became American Metal Climax (AMAX); Mr. Hochschild was named vice chairman and CEO of the combined company. In 1960, he became chairman, a position he held until his retirement in 1960. During his time with the company, he was a principal force in its international diversification, with major interests in Africa, Latin America, Canada, and elsewhere. At the Council on Foreign Relations, where he was a member for nearly four decades, Mr. Hochschild was a powerful advocate for the understanding and analysis of international business issues and their effect on the conduct of U.S. foreign policy.
