As General Bantz Craddock, Commander of EUCOM noted in his confirmation hearing, Africa in recent years has posed “the greatest security stability challenge” to EUCOM, and “a separate command for Africa would provide better focus and increased synergy in support of U.S. policy and engagement.” If U.S. agencies, both military and civilian, are able to coordinate more efficiently and effectively both among themselves as well as with their African partners and other international actors, they might be more successful at averting more complex emergencies on the continent.
