Egypt Info Service: The Egyptian Women and Economy

2006

The Egypt State Information Service provides a profile of the relationship between Egyptian women and the economy.

Woman in the Labor Force:   According to studies conducted by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), the number of workers in the age group 15 to 64 was 22.88 million in 2006.

While women constituted 49 per cent of the population, they made up only 22.34 per cent of the entire labor force. This can be attributed to the fact that many Egyptian women prefer to take care of the families after they are married.

However, women's participation in the labor force increased from 21.4 in 1999 to 22.91 in 2005, only to drop to 22.3 per cent in 2006.
