International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS)

According to the International Maritime Organization, "the main objective of the SOLAS Convention is to specify minimum standards for the construction, equipment and operation of ships, compatible with their safety." It was adopted on November 1, 1974 and entered into force on May 25, 1980. The history of earlier SOLAS conventions can be found here.
