Communiqué
Joint Communiqué of the USA and the People's Republic of China, 1972 (Shanghai Communique)
President Nixon's historic visit to China resulted in this joint communiqué, issued on February 28, 1972, in which the two countries began to normalize relations and 'agreed to disagree' on thorny issues such as Taiwan. It sent China a clear message that the US accepted the Chinese Communist Party's rule of the country. This document is one of three joint communiqués, including the 1979 Communiqué and the 1982 Joint Communiqué, that normalized relations between the United States and China.
