Joint Communique of the USA and the People's Republic of China, 1982

Published August 17, 1982

Following growing tensions between China and the US regarding American arms sales to Taiwan, this joint communiqué was released on August 17, 1982, to resolve this point. The US agreed to not increase arms to Taiwan; the PRC reiterated their policy of peaceful reunification. This document is one of three joint communiqués, including the Shanghai Communiqué and the 1979 Joint Communiqué, that normalized relations between the United States and China.
