The Council of Europe's Criminal Law Convention on Corruption and Additional Protocol was signed on January 27, 1999 and entered into force on July 1, 2002. The convention "is an ambitious instrument aiming at the co-ordinated criminalisation of a large number of corrupt practices. It also provides for complementary criminal law measures and for improved international co-operation in the prosecution of corruption offences".
