Department of State: Advancing Freedom and Democracy Reports

Published December 30, 2013

The State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor produced this report. The preface states, "Pursuant to the Advancing Democratic Values Act of 2007, the Department of State has prepared this report on U.S. efforts to promote democracy and human rights in nondemocratic countries and countries undergoing democratic transitions worldwide."

The report covers the following issues: U.S. Government Support for Democracy and Human Rights; Democratic Institutions and Civil Society; Economic Freedom and Opportunity; Press and Internet Freedom; Rule of Law; Protection of Other Human Rights; Promotion of Disability Rights; Promotion of Women's Rights. Early reports were organized with an overview of these major issues and in-depth discussion on a country-by-country basis. Beginning in 2011, the reports consist of the review of these issues, with footnotes to countries in which a particular issue or program is applicable.
