Maastricht Treaty

Published February 7, 1992

The Maastricht Treaty established EU citizenship and the European Monetary Union (EMU) and it initiated the road to political, economic and monetary union. Its drafting date is significant because in 1992 the reunification of Germany and the fall of the Soviet block meant it was necessary to have a re-thinking of the European project. It was signed on February 7, 1992 and entered into force on November 1, 1993.
