Christopher Alessi

Christopher Alessi reports and writes on global economics for CFR.org. Previously, he worked as a London-based correspondent for Institutional Investor magazine. Mr. Alessi wrote on a range of topics related to European finance for that publication, including banking and capital markets. He has also worked for a London-based media company, ASAP Worldwide, and was stationed in Nairobi, Kenya, and Johannesburg, South Africa, to compile economic reports on those countries. Mr. Alessi's work has appeared on the Huffington Post, GlobalPost, TheAtlantic.com, and CNN's Global Public Square blog.

Mr. Alessi holds a master's degree in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, with a concentration in foreign reporting. He also holds a bachelor's degree in international relations, with a focus on the modern Middle East, from New York University.

U.S.-based rating agencies--still reeling from a loss of credibility for being too lenient with risky financial institutions in the run-up to the global financial crisis--are once again under intense scrutiny following S&P's unprecedented downgrade of U.S. debt. The move comes on the heels of intense criticism by EU officials, who contend the raters have accelerated the European sovereign debt crisis.
