David M. Rubenstein is a co-founder and managing director of The Carlyle Group, which is one of the world's largest private equity firms, managing more than $150 billion from thirty-six offices in the United States, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Prior to co-founding Carlyle in 1987, Mr. Rubenstein practiced law in New York with the firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkin, Wharton & Garrison; served as deputy assistant to the president for domestic policy in the Carter administration; and practiced law in Washington, DC, with the firm Shaw, Pittman, Potts & Trowbridge. Mr. Rubenstein is a regent of the Smithsonian Institution, vice chairman of the board for Duke University and the Brookings Institution, and president of the Economic Club of Washington. He is on the board of directors or trustees for Johns Hopkins University, the University of Chicago, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins Medicine, the Institute for Advanced Study, the National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution, the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the American Academy in Berlin, the Young Global Leaders Foundation, and Ford's Theatre. Mr. Rubenstein is also a member of the Business Council, the visiting committee of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, the board of dean's advisors at Harvard Business School, the advisory council of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton, the advisory board of the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, the Madison Council of the Library of Congress, and the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum. He is based in Washington, DC.
