Adjunct Senior Fellow
Jere Van Dyk is a consultant to CBS News on South Asia and terrorism, and has appeared frequently on radio and television since 2001. He has given talks at the Carnegie Council, New America Foundation, World Affairs Council, Google, and Microsoft, as well as public schools, universities, and nonprofit organizations. Van Dyk has appeared on ABC, Al Jazeera, BBC, CBS, CNN, C-SPAN, Fox News, WNBC, NPR, RT, Voice of America, the Daily Show, Morning Joe, and Charlie Rose. He has been interviewed by numerous local and regional newspapers, radio and television programs, and by Belgian, British, Dutch, and French media outlets. He has also been interviewed by the Huffington Post, Big Think, Der Spiegel, and TIME. Van Dyk's book Captive: My Time as a Prisoner of the Taliban was favorably reviewed in the Boston Globe, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Weekly Standard, New Yorker, and in regional newspapers. Foreign Affairs selected Captive as a Must-Read Book for the World Ahead. Van Dyk's previous book, In Afghanistan, received positive notice in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, and New York Review of Books.
Van Dyk has written articles for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, National Interest, Baltimore Sun, Toronto Star, National Geographic, Financial Times, Paris Match, XXI, Diplomaatia, Rivista di Intelligence, Foreign Affairs, and Daily Beast. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his 1982 New York Times articles on Afghanistan.
He has been an aide to U.S. senator Henry M. Jackson (D-WA), and was executive director of Friends of Afghanistan, Inc., a nonprofit organization overseen by the National Security Council and State Department in the Reagan administration. He taught the Politics of Islam at New York University and has been a senior fellow at the Carnegie Council. Van Dyk received a BS from the University of Oregon and attended the Sorbonne and the Institute of Political Studies, Paris.
