Media Conference Call: Unrest and Insecurity in Egypt

Speaker: Steven A. Cook
Presider: Robert McMahon

The Egyptian government announced the arrests of smugglers transporting weapons from Libya toward the Egypt-Israel border, underscoring the lack of security in the Sinai Peninsula. Internally, the recent deaths of as many as two dozen Coptic Christians in clashes with Egyptian military forces has brought focus to ongoing domestic conflicts. As Egypt prepares for parliamentary elections in November, its future remains uncertain.

Listen to CFR Senior Fellow Steven Cook assess these, and other difficulties, facing Egypt. Cook, who was in Cairo when the revolt broke out, has recently authored The Struggle for Egypt—a new book providing one of the first historical analyses explaining the reasons behind the uprising.
