Shirley Ann Jackson

Shirley Ann Jackson is president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She has held senior leadership and advisory positions in government, industry, research, and academia, with a particular focus on global energy security and the national capacity for innovation. President Obama has appointed her to serve on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (2009), and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appointed her to the International Security Advisory Board to the Department of State (2011). A theoretical physicist, Dr. Jackson was chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (1995–1999), and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Philosophical Society. She is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Physical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. Jackson is a trustee of the Brookings Institution, a regent of the Smithsonian Institution, and a member of the executive committee of the Council on Competitiveness. She is a director of NYSE Euronext, IBM, FedEx, Marathon Oil, Medtronic, and PSEG. She is based in Troy, NY.
