The sixtieth anniversary of Israel's independence provides an opportunity to reflect on the country's complex and often contested history, as well as many of the challenges the nation still faces. Throughout those six decades, the United States has played a major role, starting in 1948, when Washington cast the first and decisive vote in favor of the partitioning of what had been the British Mandate for Palestine.
