U.S. and Japan Mutual Defense Assistance Agreement, 1954

Building on the Mutual Security Treaty of 1951 between the United States and Japan, this treaty provided for the presence of U.S. armed forces in Japan "in the interest of peace and security" and called for Japan to assume greater responsibility for its defense, "always avoiding armament which could be an offensive threat or serve other than to promote peace and security...".
