  Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (Simpson-Mazzoli Act), P.L. 99-603

  Published November 6, 1986

  Among its stipulations, this legislation made it a punishable crime to knowingly hire an illegal immigrant. It also set up an amnesty program for illegals present in the United States since January 1982.
