| Interviewer: | Michael Moran, Executive Editor, CFR.org |
February 6, 2008
Foreign Affairs Managing Editor Gideon Rose discusses the forthcoming March/April issue of the magazine with CFR.org Executive Editor Michael Moran. They begin by examining the lead article— “Us versus Them” by Catholic University Professor Jerry Muller—which explains why outside the United States ethnic nationalism has driven global politics and conflict in the past and will continue to do so for generations to come.
They then turn to “The Democratic Rollback,” an article in which Hoover Institution Fellow Larry Diamond explains why the advance of democratization has stalled in recent years, in countries from Russia and Venezuela to Nigeria and Kenya to Thailand and the Philippines .
Finally, they discuss a review essay on intelligence reform by former CIA official Paul Pillar, who savages a recent National Book Award winner and explains why many critics of the intelligence community have greatly exaggerated views about what intelligence agencies can do and propose solutions at odds with the real problems that exist.
