This report chronicles the ensuing reactions by the United States Congress to the Tibetan Independence Movement. What started on March 10, 2008 with a series of demonstrations in Tibetan regions of China to mark the 49th anniversary of an unsuccessful Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule, developed into mobs of people burning and looting in Lhasa. Authorities of the People's Republic of China (PRC) responded by sealing off Tibet and moving in security forces. Beijing has defended its actions as necessary to restore civil order and prevent further violence.
