Joint Communique of the USA and the People's Republic of China, 1972 (Shanghai Communique)

President Nixon’s historic visit to China resulted in this joint communiqué, in which the two countries began to normalize relations and ‘agreed to disagree’ on thorny issues such as Taiwan. It sent China a clear message that the US accepted the Chinese Communist Party’s rule of the country.
