  Joint Communique of the USA and the People's Republic of China on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations, 1979

  Published January 1, 1979

  Following the growth of ties between China and the US in 1978, the two countries established full diplomatic relations effective January 1, 1979. The US repeated its approval of the People’s Republic of China as the sole government of the country and that Taiwan was part of China.
