This resolution was passed 13 years after the United Nations first put sanctions on Iraq in 1990. The decision to lift the sanctions came about two months after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began. In the resolution the UN also gave its blessing for a coalition provisional authority to run post-war Iraq until Iraq elections.
