Paradise Beneath Her Feet

Over the centuries throughout the world, women have struggled for equality and basic rights. Their challenge in the Middle East has intensified given the rise of a political Islam that too often condemns women's empowerment as Western cultural imperialism or anti-Islamic. In Paradise Beneath Her Feet, Isobel Coleman shows how Muslim women and men are fighting back with progressive interpretations of Islam to support women's rights in a growing movement of Islamic feminism.

In this book, Dr. Coleman journeys through the strategic crescent of the greater Middle East—Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan—to reveal how activists are working within the tenets of Islam to create economic, political, and educational opportunities for women. She argues that these efforts are critical to bridging the conflict between those championing reform and those seeking to oppress women in the name of religious tradition. Success will bring greater stability and prosperity to the Middle East and stands to transform the region.

Dr. Coleman highlights a number of Muslim women and men who are among the most influential Islamic feminist thinkers, and illuminates the on-the-ground experiences of women who are driving change. These quiet revolutionaries are using Islamic feminism to change the terms of religious debate—to fight for women's rights within Islam instead of against it.

Further Projects

Op-Ed

Assign students to write an op-ed based on one of the following topics. Assignments should be evaluated based on the importance of the topic selected, and the clarity and brevity with which the author presents a specific point of view. Because the op-ed is short, it requires different writing skills from a conventional term paper—the point must be made in the first or second paragraph, the writing style is usually more argumentative than in term papers, and the writing style must be simple even as the ideas advanced are sophisticated. These guidelines will help in focusing the argument—which is best done before writing—because many students choose arguments that are either too sprawling or esoteric for good op-eds.

  1. Evaluate the methods being used to bring gender equality to the Middle East—education for women, economic opportunities, political representation through quota systems, health programs, etc. How successful has each method been?
  2. Explore the evolution of feminist movements in the Middle East over the past century. How do modern Islamic feminists compare to feminist movements of the early 20th century?
  3. Assess the ability of Islamic feminism to bring about change in the Middle East.
  4. Compare and contrast secular feminist movements and Islamic feminist movements. Evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of each movement in the Middle East.
