About the Expert
Matthieu Aikins is a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and a contributing editor at Rolling Stone, and has been a fellow at New America and the Nation Institute. He has reported from Afghanistan and the Middle East since 2008. Aikins is a two-time National Magazine Award finalist and has received many honors, including the Polk and Livingston awards. He is currently writing a book about the global refugee crisis, based on a journey he made with Afghan refugees in 2016. Spanning wars, coups, and crises in Iran, Turkey, Syria, and Greece, the book will tell the stories of people displaced by conflict and poverty as they follow dangerous routes toward an uncertain welcome in the West. Aikins graduated from New York University with a master’s degree in Near Eastern studies.
