Political History and Theory
This meeting is part of a series hosted with the National History Center featuring prominent historians who will examine the events and times that shaped foreign policy as we know it today.
The Sinews of Power (a reference to John Brewer's 1989 classic of the same name) examines some cases, over the centuries, of the intimate relationship between a nation's fiscal strength and its politico-military activities and presence abroad. The talk will neither be strictly about military policy, nor about national and international finances - but about the interaction of both. The implications for the United States in the world today are rather obvious, but will be spelled out.
