Europe's China Policy and Transatlantic Relations
Project Expert
About the Project
China has emerged as a major economic and security challenge to Europe. At the same time, disagreements about how to address this threat have driven a wedge into not only Europe, but also the transatlantic relationship. On economic policy, the European Commission’s focus on de-risking represent the first steps of awakening European China policy to today’s reality. On security, however, few Europeans, even in NATO, are seriously discussing how Europeans can contribute to Indo-Pacific security, and China’s support for Russia’s war is posing a threat to Europe itself. The transatlantic dialogue about burden sharing in Europe and the Indo-Pacific is only at the beginning. The Project on Europe's China Policy and Transatlantic Relations aims to foster a transatlantic discussion by engaging both sides in detailed and nuanced conversations about the future of Europe’s and the U.S. approach to China. It will investigate the issues at the heart of the transatlantic relationship and the shifting role of China in Europe vis-à-vis security and economics.
