Steven A. Tananbaum Chair in International Economics

This chair supports a distinguished scholar with expertise in global economics. It was started first as a fellowship in 2011 by Steven A. Tananbaum and GoldenTree Asset Management and was established as a chair in 2021 by Steven Tananbaum to ensure that international economics remains a point of focus for the Council in perpetuity.

Steven A. Tananbaum (GoldenTree Asset Management)

Steven Tananbaum is founder, managing partner, and chief investment officer of GoldenTree Asset Management, overseeing the firm’s investments across all fund offerings. He is also a lead portfolio manager for GoldenTree Loan Management, chairs GoldenTree Asset Management’s executive committee and distressed committee, and is co-chair of the risk committee. He founded GoldenTree in 2000 and has more than thirty years of experience in credit markets and investing.

Prior to forming GoldenTree, Tananbaum joined MacKay Shields as an investment specialist in 1989, becoming head of its high-yield group in 1991 and forming the firm’s hedge fund area as lead portfolio manager in 1997. Prior to joining MacKay Shields, Tananbaum worked primarily on high-yield and merger and acquisition transactions in the corporate finance department of Kidder, Peabody & Co. Tananbaum received a BA in economics from Vassar College in 1987 and is a CFA charter holder. He has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 2007.
