Outreach

The Council is committed to reaching out to different constituencies so that they better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other governments. Traditionally, it has done this through: press briefings for journalists; meetings and conference calls for corporate leaders; a Congressional program for policymakers on Capitol Hill; embassy lunches for Washington’s diplomatic community; media appearances and Congressional testimony by Council Fellows; Task Forces reports; Foreign Affairs, the leading journal of global politics; and CFR.org, the single best website for users searching for information and insights about international politics.

The Council is also devoting more time and energy to connecting with and serving as a resource for other groups of interested citizens whose voices are increasingly important to the national foreign policy debate. These constituencies include educators and students, religious and congregational leaders, state and local officials, and nonprofit, civic, and community leaders.

  • Religious and Congregational Leaders: The Council on Foreign Relations Religion and Foreign Policy Initiative engages religious and congregational leaders, scholars, and thinkers, from across the country, in cross-denominational conversations on global issues; and seeks to serve as a resource of information and analysis on topics at the nexus of religion and foreign policy. Council programming includes a monthly Religion and Foreign Policy Conference Call series featuring Council fellows and scholars, access to live teleconferences and webcasts of New York and Washington Council meetings, and a Religion and Foreign Policy Symposia Series.
Sign up for the monthly Religion and Foreign Policy Bulletin email.
  • State and Local Government Officials: The Council on Foreign Relations State and Local Officials Initiative provides a forum for bipartisan discussion of pressing international issues that affect the priorities and agendas of state and local governments. The Council seeks to serve as a resource of information and analysis on critical local issues including homeland security, public health, immigration, trade, investment, competitiveness, and energy supply. Council programming includes a monthly State and Local Officials Conference Call series featuring Council fellows and scholars, access to live teleconferences and webcasts of New York and Washington Council meetings, and briefings by Council experts.

  • Nonprofit, Civic, and Community Leaders: The Council on Foreign Relations Civic and Nonprofit Organizations Initiative serves as a resource of information and analysis for leaders from civic, nonprofit, and nongovernmental organizations with an interest in global issues. Current Council programming includes access to live teleconferences and webcasts of Council meetings, with plans to expand programming in the coming year.
