The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is pleased to announce a $2.7 million endowment commitment from Hyundai Motor Group to establish the Chung Mong-Koo International Affairs Fellowship in the Republic of Korea. The new fellowship will expand CFR’s prestigious International Affairs Fellowship (IAF) program, offering U.S. scholars and professionals the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in Korea and deepen understanding of one of the United States’ most important strategic and economic partners.
The Chung Mong-Koo IAF in the Republic of Korea is expected to launch in fall 2026, with the first fellows beginning their placements in 2027. Selected U.S. citizens with a strong record of professional achievement will spend three to twelve months in the country conducting research, building professional networks, and contributing to public dialogue on issues central to U.S.-Korea relations. The program aims to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between rising generations of leaders in both countries.
“The Republic of Korea is a steadfast U.S. ally and an increasingly influential force shaping economic and security dynamics across the Asia-Pacific region and globally,” said CFR President Michael Froman. “This fellowship will ensure that future U.S. policymakers, civil society leaders, and business professionals acquire insights into Korea’s priorities and perspectives. Hyundai Motor Group has been a valued corporate member of CFR, and we are deeply grateful that they are supporting this transformative fellowship program.”
“Hyundai is proud to support this important initiative honoring the legacy of our honorary chairman and longtime visionary leader, Chung Mong-Koo,” said Hyundai Motor Group President Sung Kim. “The establishment of the Chung Mong-Koo IAF in the Republic of Korea will serve as a powerful bridge between our two nations—expanding people-to-people connections, deepening mutual understanding, and strengthening the enduring partnership between the United States and Korea.”
Since its launch in 1967, CFR’s International Affairs Fellowship program has become one of the most respected training grounds for emerging foreign policy leaders. Many of the more than 650 alumni have gone on to serve in senior positions across the U.S. government, academia, and the private sector. The Chung Mong-Koo IAF in the Republic of Korea will build on that legacy and draw on the program’s successful expansions in Canada, Europe, India, Indonesia, and Japan, adapting best practices to create a transformative experience for fellows in Korea.
