CFR’s Global Energy Innovation Index measures the contributions of thirty-nine countries to the global process of improving energy technologies. It draws on sixteen indicators that are compiled into knowledge, markets, and policy subindexes, which feed into the main index. Most indicators are scaled by national GDP or population to enable fairer comparisons between large and small countries. Use this interactive tool to dive more deeply into the data for specific countries and indicators. To explore the entire dataset or read the report, click on the buttons below.

Highlight and compare up to three countries across all indexes and indicators in two different time periods.
Global View
Energy innovation is a global process, but not all countries contribute equally. Use the map to explore relative national contributions on specific indexes or indicators in two time periods. Lighter shades indicate higher scores and darker shades, lower ones.
Detailed Rankings
The table below shows national rankings in 2025 across the main index and the three subindexes or each subindex and its subsidiary indicators. Click on a subindex or indicator column to sort the countries in the table on that column’s rank order.
