Trade accounts for a growing percentage of U.S. economic output, but as a percentage of GDP it is still lower than that of almost every other developed country in the world. While the Obama administration has made a significant push to promote new bilateral and regional free trade agreements over the past two years, it continues to face resistance from labor advocates fearful of globalization and the exportation of U.S. jobs overseas.
