Robert Danin, CFR’s Eni Enrico Mattei Senior Fellow for Middle East and Africa Studies, identifies the winners and losers in the deal brokered between Israel and Hamas to secure the release of Gilad Shalit, abducted by Hamas in June of 2006. “It was the Arab Spring and the regional environment that pushed both Hamas and Israel to be more conciliatory and ultimately conclude this deal,” Danin argues.
