Sadanand Dhume

Sadanand Dhume is senior fellow for India, Pakistan and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), where he writes about the region’s political economy and foreign policy. He also writes the biweekly East Is East column for the Wall Street Journal focused on South Asia and the South Asian diaspora.

Dhume is the author of Tinderbox: The Unpredictable Rise and Uncertain Future of Modern India, which examines the dramatic political and economic changes underway in the world’s most populous nation. His previous book, My Friend the Fanatic: Travels with a Radical Islamist, has been described as “easily the best account by a journalist writing on Islam in contemporary Indonesia,” “an eye-opening piece of reportage,” and “a riveting portrait of Indonesia in flux.”

Before joining CFR, Dhume was a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC. He has also been a fellow at the Asia Society and has worked as a foreign correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review and the Wall Street Journal Asia in India and Indonesia. He has testified before Congress on U.S.-India relations and U.S. policy toward South Asia. His articles have been published in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the Wilson Quarterly, the National Interest, National Review and Commentary, among others. He has appeared on CNN, PBS, NPR, BBC, Al Jazeera, and numerous Indian TV channels.

Dhume holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Delhi, a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University, and a master’s degree in international relations from Princeton University. He lives in Washington, DC with his wife.
