This update represents violence in Nigeria and related to Boko Haram in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger from January 14 to January 20, 2023. 
The map depicts deaths by state. Borno State, in Nigeria's North East, is the epicenter of Boko Haram-related violence, which has also spilled into neighboring Adamawa and Yobe states, among others.

Below is a visualization and description of some of the most significant incidents of political violence in Nigeria from January 14 to January 20, 2023. This update also represents violence related to Boko Haram in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. These incidents are included in the Nigeria Security Tracker.

 

 

  • January 14: Kidnappers abducted a Catholic priest in Oye, Ekiti. 
  • January 14: Gunmen attacked a political spokesperson's home and killed three in Ideato North, Imo. 
  • January 14: Kidnappers abducted four in Ilorin, Kwara. 
  • January 14: Police officers killed one bandit in Igabi, Kaduna. 
  • January 15: A cult clash resulted in four deaths in Oredo, Edo. 
  • January 15: Gunmen killed one police officer during an attack on an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Enugu South, Enugu. 
  • January 15: Bandits killed one Catholic priest in Paikoro, Niger State. 
  • January 15: Bandits abducted twenty-five at a church in Kankara, Katsina. 
  • January 15: Troops killed three Boko Haram militants in Monguno, Borno. 
  • January 16: Troops killed two bandits in Chikun, Kaduna. 
  • January 16: Military airstrikes killed forty-two Boko Haram militants in Shiroro, Niger State. 
  • January 17: Two gunmen and one police officer were killed during a clash in Aba, Abia. 
  • January 17: Kidnappers killed six and abducted one in Zangon Kataf, Kaduna. 
  • January 17: Troops killed two bandits in Danmusa, Katsina.
  • January 18: Troops killed one bandit in Danmusa, Katsina.
  • January 18: Troops killed seven bandits in Danko Wasagu, Kebbi.
  • January 18: Bandits killed three and abducted six in Jibia, Katsina. 
  • January 18: Police officers killed three Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) members in Oguta, Imo. 
  • January 18: Herdsmen killed three and abducted thirteen in Ovia North-East, Edo. 
  • January 18: One person was killed at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally in Esan Central, Edo. 
  • January 19: Herdsmen killed eight near an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Makurdi, Benue. 
  • January 19: Kidnappers abducted eight in Jalingo, Taraba. 
  • January 19: Kidnappers abducted six in Isi-Uzo, Enugu. 
  • January 20: Kidnappers abducted three in Ideato North, Imo. 
  • January 20: Kidnappers abducted six pupils in Doma, Nassarawa. 
  • January 20: Kidnappers killed one and abducted one in Jos East, Plateau. 
  • January 20: Gunmen killed two All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Izzi, Ebonyi.
