Ishaan Tharoor is an Edward R. Murrow press fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. Tharoor is an award-winning global affairs journalist. He currently writes the weekly “Global Notes” column at The New Yorker. Until April 2026, he was a columnist on the international desk of the Washington Post, where he authored WorldView, the Post’s flagship column and newsletter on global politics. His reporting and analysis for the Post sent him to four continents, two World Cups, and many geopolitical conferences. In 2021, he won the Arthur Ross Media Award in Commentary, a prize administered by the American Academy of Diplomacy. In 2024, he was honored with the Ted Sorensen award for global public service, bestowed by Network 20/20, a New York-based group that seeks to bridge the gap between the private sector and foreign policy worlds. He is a media leader at the World Economic Forum and appears as a commentator on global affairs regularly on podcasts, radio and television for outlets such as CNN, NPR, CBS and the BBC. Before joining the Post in 2014, he spent eight years as a senior editor and correspondent at Time magazine, based first in Hong Kong and later in New York. His work took him to Maoist jungle camps in Nepal and the hurly-burly of the election trail in the Philippines to helping run the magazine’s front-of-book and launching Time’s international vertical. He graduated with a BA in history from Yale University.
