2025 Local Journalists Workshop

CFR hosted its fourth Local Journalists Workshop on May 12 and 13, 2025, in New York. The workshop brought together over eighty writers, reporters, editors, and journalism scholars from across the country to connect the local stories they cover to pressing international issues and world events. This event was made possible with the generous support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Opening Session: A Conversation With David E. Sanger

New York Times White House and National Security Correspondent David E. Sanger discusses his career covering U.S. foreign policy, global events, and ways to connect local stories to international dynamics with CFR President Mike Froman.

Demystifying Trade, Tariffs, and the Economy

Shannon K. O’Neil,  Rebecca Patterson, and Jonathan E. Hillman, speak with Justin Vogt about U.S. trade relations with Canada and Mexico under the new administration, how the Trump administration’s economic policy will affect markets and the U.S. economy, U.S. economic security and competition with China, and potential geopolitical consequences of a trade war with China.

Press Freedom in a New Era of Reporting

Aimee Edmondson, George Freeman, Jodie Ginsberg, and Carla Anne Robbins discuss retaliation against news outlets for their coverage of the Trump administration, legal challenges facing local news organizations in the current political environment, and global threats to press freedom and current initiatives to safeguard journalists worldwide.

Covering Deportation and Immigration Stories

Edward Alden, Laura Collins, Rose Cuison-Villazor, Elise Labott discuss the current state of U.S. immigration and border security, the economic case for immigration reform, the legal framework of the U.S. immigration system, and the Trump administration’s policies to increase deportations.
