About the Project

The Indian Ocean region plays a critical role in international politics and global trade. African interests in the region are diverse: maritime security and defense; climate change; illegal, unidentified, and unregulated fishing; trafficking of drugs and people; and opportunities for economic development. This project explores the intersection between geopolitical competition in the Indian Ocean and African island and coastal states’ equities in the region. What are the primary concerns of African states? How are the major powers jockeying for position taking those into consideration or exacerbating problems? The project on African equities in the Indian Ocean focuses on identifying issues, areas of mutual interest, and policy recommendations for developing and strengthening U.S. partnerships with African coastal and island states.
