About the Project

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2, first detected in Wuhan, China, triggered the most severe pandemic in a century. The crisis and China’s response raised critical questions with profound implications for global health security, Chinese domestic politics, and foreign policy. Key questions driving this research include: How did China’s pandemic response accelerate pre-existing trends toward political centralization, transform state-society relations, and contribute to growing securitization of policy frameworks? What role did the zero-COVID policy play in shaping China’s economic trajectory? To what extent did the pandemic represent an inflection point in China’s international ascendance? This project convenes a study group through roundtable meetings and a workshop to examine how COVID-19 shaped Chinese politics, economics, and foreign policy. The project will generate multiple publications, culminating in a book analyzing the lasting ramifications of China’s COVID response.

This project is made possible with the generous support of the Smith Richardson Foundation.
