As the effects of climate change mount, high-carbon energy sources continue to provide most of the world’s power. On average, 83 percent of tracker countries’ energy comes from high-carbon sources such as oil, whereas 17 percent comes from solar and other renewables. Low-carbon sources, however, are on the rise, particularly in developed countries.

The Economist magazine’s Big Mac Index uses the price of McDonald’s Big Macs around the world, expressed in a common currency (U.S. dollars), to measure the extent to which various currencies are over- or under-valued. The Big Mac is a global product, identical across borders, which makes it an interesting one for this purpose.
