Steven A. Denning is the chairman of General Atlantic LLC, a firm he joined in 1980 and has helped build into a leading global growth equity firm with $30 billion in capital under management and thirteen offices worldwide. Denning joined General Atlantic after working with McKinsey & Company.
Denning is a member of the board of directors of the Council on Foreign Relations, the National Park Foundation, College Advising Corps, and the New York Regional Plan Association. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Bridgespan Group and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. At Stanford University, Denning is chair of the Global Advisory Council to the President, the Freeman Spogli Institute Council, and the Natural Capital Stanford Advisory Council; he is also a member of the global advisory board of the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program and the advisory council of the Stanford Distinguished Careers Institute. He is a director of Engility Corporation.
Denning is former chairman of the board of trustees of Stanford and former co-chair of the board of directors of the Nature Conservancy. He is chairman emeritus of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Advisory Council and a trustee emeritus of the Brookings Institution, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Georgia Tech Foundation. Denning was formerly a trustee of the National Parks Conservation Association; member of the advisory council of the McKinsey Investment Office; member of advisory boards of the Georgia Institute of Technology and the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University; and member of the boards of trustees of the Cancer Research Institute and the Connecticut Science Center.
Denning received a BS from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He then served for six years in the U.S. Navy, during which time he also earned an MS from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Denning received an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1978.
